20090204636 | MULTIMODAL OBJECT DE-DUPLICATION - Various object de-duplication techniques may be applied to object systems (such as to files in a file store) to identify similar or identical objects or portions thereof, so that duplicate objects or object portions may be associated with one copy, and the duplicate copies may be removed. However, an object de-duplication technique that is suitable for de-duplicating one type of object may be inefficient for de-duplicating another type of object; e.g., a de-duplication method that significantly condenses sets of small objects may achieve very little condensation among sets of large objects, and vice versa. A multimodal approach to object de-duplication may be devised that analyzes an object to be stored and chooses a de-duplication technique that is likely to be effective for storing the object. The object index may be configured to support several de-duplication schemes for indexing and storing many types of objects in a space-economizing manner. | 2009-08-13 |
20090204637 | REAL-TIME COMPUTERIZED ANNOTATION OF PICTURES - A computerized annotation method achieves real-time operation and better optimization properties while preserving the architectural advantages of the generative modeling approach. A novel clustering algorithm for objects is represented by discrete distributions, or bags of weighted vectors, thereby minimizing the total within cluster distance, a criterion used by the k-means algorithm. A new mixture modeling method, the hypothetical local mapping (HLM) method, is used to efficiently build a probability measure on the space of discrete distributions. Thus, in accord with the invention every image is characterized by a statistical distribution. The profiling model specifies a probability law for distributions directly. | 2009-08-13 |
20090204638 | AUTOMATED CLIENT SITEMAP GENERATION - Methods and computer-storage media for automated generation of domain sitemap files are provided. A universal resource locator (URL) for a web site having a plurality of web pages associated therewith is received. Log files and permission controls are analyzed to ascertain whether each web page has been previously crawled and which web pages may be crawled and/or indexed. The permitted, not-previously-crawled web pages are subsequently crawled and the relational structure of the web site is ascertained. Other items of metadata, such as web page modification frequency or priority values, also are determined. Once the structure and metadata are available, a current sitemap is generated that provides the hierarchy and related details in the form of metadata. The sitemap file is then written to a disk and may then be sent to search engines as generated or in a compressed format. | 2009-08-13 |
20090204639 | SELECTIVE CONTENT REPLACEMENT FOR MEDIA PLAYERS - A network- and/or client-side media content replacement system/service (“MCRS”) facilitates identification and replacement of media content on media content players when defects associated with the media content players could negatively affect play of the media content. In one exemplary scenario, a media content player transmits a first message, which uniquely identifies the original media content item, to a network-based MCRS. It is determined based on the first message whether a defect associated with the media content player could negatively affect play of the original media content item, and if it is determined that play of the original media content item may be negatively affected, an alternate media content item is identified (for example, via a second message transmitted from the MCRS) to replace at least a portion of the original media content item. | 2009-08-13 |

20090204649 | File Deduplication Using Storage Tiers - A method and apparatus for removing duplicated data in a file system utilizing the concept of storage tiers. A synthetic namespace is created via file virtualization, and is comprised of one or more file systems. Deduplication is applied at the namespace level and on all of the file systems comprising the synthetic namespace. All files in a file system in a higher storage tier whose contents are identical to at least one other file in the synthetic namespace are moved to a destination file system in a lower storage tier. For each set of duplicated files that are moved from the original servers, a single instance copy of the file is left behind as a mirror copy. Read access to a duplicated file is redirected to its mirror copy. When the first write to a duplicated file is received, the association from the duplicated file stored in the destination server to its mirror copy that is stored in the origin server is discarded. Access to the “modified” duplicated file will then resume normally from the destination server. | 2009-08-13 |
20090204650 | File Deduplication using Copy-on-Write Storage Tiers - A method and apparatus for removing duplicated data in a file system utilizing copy-on-write storage tiers. A synthetic namespace is created via file virtualization, and is comprised of one or more file systems. Deduplication is applied at the namespace level and on all of the file systems comprising the synthetic namespace. A set of storage policies selects a set of files from the namespace that become the candidates for deduplication. The entire chosen set is migrated to a Copy-On-Write (COW) storage tier. This Copy-On-Write storage tier may be a virtual storage tier that resides within another physical storage tier (such as tier-1 or tier-2 storage). Each file stored in a Copy-On-Write storage tier is deduped, regardless of whether there is any file with identical contents in the set or in the COW storage tier. After deduplication, the deduped file becomes a sparse file where all the files storage space is reclaimed while all the file's attributes, including size, remain. A copy of each file that is deduped is left as a mirror copy and is stored in a mirror server. If two mirror copies have identical contents, only one mirror copy will be stored in the mirror server. Read access to a file in the COW storage tier (COW file) is redirected to its mirror copy if the file is deduped. When the first write to a COW file is received, the mirror copy stored in the mirror server is copied as the contents of the COW file, and the association from the COW file to its mirror copy is discarded. Thereafter, access to the “un-deduped” file will resume normally from the COW file. | 2009-08-13 |

20090204669 | Method and Apparatus for Measuring Web Site Performance - A web site is provisioned with a proxy that receives a page request intended for the server and records a first time. The page request is then forwarded to the server for response. The response stream generated by the server is intercepted at the proxy at a second time. As the stream is forwarded to the requesting client, the proxy inserts a page script that, upon execution at the client, calculates a page render time. This time is determined by calculating the difference between a third time (the time at which the page script begins execution at the client) and a fourth time (a time at which the page rendering is complete). Upon completion of the page rendering, the script opens a connection back to the server and returns a packet that includes the page render time. This packet is received at a fifth time. A transaction record is then built by the proxy using the timestamp data. | 2009-08-13 |
