20100021672 | POUCH OPENING FEATURE AND METHOD FOR MAKING THE SAME - A flexible packaging structure has built-in opening features in a laminate with a first structure adhesively joined to a second structure. A tear area is formed by laser ablation of the laminate along a junction between the first and second portions preferably prior to assembling the laminate into the package. Laser ablation begins at the center of the tear area and progressively moves the laser in a direction radially outward from the center of the tear area. During assembly of the package, a seal is formed between end portions of the first and second portions of the laminate. A score line and a sealant reduction area are also introduced to the package to facilitate opening. The package is opened by pulling the seal near the tear area in a direction along the score line until the contents of the package are accessible. | 01-28-2010 |
20110150371 | Flexible Pouch With Easy-Opening Features - A flexible pouch is formed from a laminate having built-in opening features. The laminate is wrapped/folded into a generally tubular configuration and sealed at top and bottom ends and along a longitudinal fin. A tear initiation feature is provided in the form of a hole extending through the laminate and located within a top seal of the pouch. The tear initiation feature is located at one longitudinal edge of the pouch when the laminate is wrapped and sealed to form the pouch. A fin tear-propagating feature is also provided in the form of two tear areas formed respectively in the side edges of the laminate such that the tear areas substantially coincide on the fin so as to form the fin tear-propagating feature, the fin tear-propagating feature being substantially in transverse alignment with the tear initiation feature. In another embodiment, the tear initiation feature is provided as a score line extending across the pouch. | 06-23-2011 |

20100113241 | METHOD FOR MAKING A FLEXIBLE PACKAGING STRUCTURE WITH A BUILT-IN OPENING AND RECLOSE FEATURE - A flexible packaging laminate is formed to have a built-in opening and reclose feature by forming the laminate as a two-part structure having an outer structure joined in face-to-face relation with an inner structure. Score lines are formed in both structures to enable an opening to be formed through the laminate by lifting an opening portion (e.g., a flap or the like) of the two structures out of the plane of the laminate. The score line through the outer structure defines a larger opening than the score line through the inner structure, such that a marginal region of the outer structure extends beyond the edge of the opening portion of the inner structure. A pressure-sensitive adhesive is used to re-adhere the marginal region to an underlying surface of the inner structure adjacent the opening through the laminate. | 05-06-2010 |

20100047594 | EQUIPMENT AND METHOD FOR PHYSICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION - A physical vapor deposition apparatus for coating a substrate that includes a substrate holder that receives the substrate and a coating material source that emits a divergent stream of coating material. The divergent stream of coating material includes a diverse portion of coating material and a directed portion of coating material. The apparatus further includes a blinder means, positioned to be in operative engagement with the coating material source, for receiving and impacting the divergent stream of coating material so that the directed portion of coating material continuously exits the blinder means traveling generally toward the substrate holder. The directed portion of coating material exhibits less divergence than the divergent stream of coating material. | 02-25-2010 |
